Ivy League Basketball Recruiting Reality Check

Most families underestimate how good Ivy League basketball really is, and that misunderstanding can quietly sabotage the recruiting plan before it ever gains momentum. We touched on this when we sat down for an interview with Dwayne Pina, head coach at St. George’s School and former Brown assistant, who has seen Ivy League recruiting from both sides of the process.

This conversation is especially valuable for high school players considering a transfer or postgrad year, parents who want both elite academics and real basketball opportunity, and coaches trying to place high-academic players without dragging the process out.

Ivy League Basketball Level Is Higher Than Families Think

Cory:
“Okay. And you went from there to Brown, right? And a lot of the kids you and I talked to, really their ultimate goal is to play in the Ivy Leagues. What do players and parents need to know about the Ivy Leagues? It’s maybe not that obvious.”

Dwayne:
“Man, I guess the first thing is that the level of basketball, the level of talent in the Ivy League probably supersedes what they think that it is, right?”

Dwayne:
“I think kids just, you know, and family sometimes just tend to think, it’s Brown, it’s Harvard, it’s Yale. Like, my son can play there, but like,”

Dwayne:
“Those schools are playing basketball at a really, really high level. Those schools are winning NCAA tournament games. Those schools are doing high majors. Those schools are very competitive with high major schools.”

Dwayne:
“If you look at the team RPIs, a lot of times the Ivy League is somewhere between, I don’t know, 9 and 13 depending on a given year.”

Ivy League Recruiting Reality: Level Alignment Speeds Up the Timeline

Dwayne:
“I do think that families need to make sure, one of the things now as a high school coach I tell my guys is that if we need to be aligned with what your college expectations are like… if I think that you should be in the UAA or thinking UAA and you’re thinking ACC, we’re not aligned. That’s a problem.”

Dwayne:
“And I think sometimes with families, if they’re thinking Ivy and the Ivy League has them pegged as… again, high level basketball at the UAA level, just using that for an example, but they’re pegged at that level, then that sort of discrepancy, that delta that exists, it just makes for a long recruiting process.”

Dwayne:
“So I think the sooner you can get to what the market’s dictating your level is, the better off the process and the smoother the process goes.”

Recruiting Takeaway: Make the Ivy Plan Match the Ivy Standard

If Ivy League basketball is the goal, it has to be treated like the level it actually is, not just the name on the sweatshirt. The fastest way to improve recruiting outcomes is to get aligned early, be honest about level, and build a plan that reflects how Ivy coaches actually evaluate players.
