This is one of the most common questions I hear from players and parents, and the answer isn’t always what they want to hear. After years of coaching and advising student-athletes, I’ve learned that playing time at prep schools is never guaranteed, but understanding how it works can help you make better decisions.

The Reality of Prep School Playing Time

Truth is, your playing time will depend on multiple factors that evolve throughout the season. I’ve seen highly touted recruits struggle to get minutes, and unheralded players work their way into starting roles. The prep school coach will worst case play each player during the season so they have game footage to share with college coaches.

Prep School Basketball Playing TimeFactors That Influence Your Minutes

Performance and Preparation

Your daily approach matters more than your reputation. I remember a guard who came to us with impressive accolades but struggled to see the floor because he couldn’t adjust to the defensive schemes. Meanwhile, a less-heralded player earned significant minutes through his dedication to learning the prep school coach’s system. Welcome to basketball at the next level.  Each time you bump up a level the competition will be tougher and there are less available roster spots.  This is especially true for guards.

Team Dynamics

Every prep school team is different each year. The roster composition, playing style, and team needs all impact playing time distribution. What worked for last year’s team might not apply to this year’s squad.  When players show up in August about 70% of them are about as good as the coach thought they would be. 15% are surprisingly better and 15% are worse. This is why playing time is hard to promise.

If you aren’t playing there is also a chance that the player in front of you is better.  This is not a bad thing.  You will get better by battling this player each day in practice.  You have over 100 practices and around 30 games.  Development happens in practice.

Taking Control of Your Opportunity

Before Committing

Do your homework:

  • Study the program’s rotation patterns via videos
  • Understand the coaching philosophy; ask him!
  • Look at returning players in your position
  • Talk to players from previous years
  • Ask about playing time opportunities

After Arriving

Your actions speak louder than your recruiting rankings:

  • Show up prepared for every practice every since day
  • Master the playbook
  • Be coachable
  • If you do want more playing time, talk to the coach
  • Contribute positively to team culture

The Hard TruthPrep School Basketball Playing Time

Here’s something many won’t tell you: there’s no crystal ball for playing time. Even the most talented players must earn their minutes daily. I’ve seen countless players transfer schools chasing guaranteed playing time, only to face the same challenges elsewhere.

Making an Informed Decision

Instead of focusing solely on immediate playing time, consider:

  • The program’s track record for development
  • Quality of coaching and training
  • Competition level in practice
  • College placement history

Final Thoughts

The best prep school experience isn’t always about getting the most minutes immediately. It’s about finding an environment where you can grow, compete, and develop into the best player and student you can be. Sometimes, that means embracing the challenge of earning your role rather than having it handed to you.

Remember, your prep school journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Focus on controlling what you can control – your effort, attitude, and preparation. The playing time will follow.
