Why Recovery Matters in Prep Basketball Training
For high school hoopers aiming to earn a college roster spot, staying healthy is just as important as hitting shots. Parents want durability, coaches value reliability, and prep schools are searching for athletes who can handle the grind of a long season.
We sat down with Tim DiFrancesco, former Head Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Los Angeles Lakers (2011–2017), to discuss recovery strategies that shaped NBA legends like Kobe Bryant. His perspective offers a blueprint for young players trying to maximize performance through smarter recovery.
Kobe Bryant’s Relentless Recovery Habits
Cory: Back to Kobe Bryant, one of the goats of all time—you mentioned he had a growth mindset. But I’ve heard about him working out three times a day, 4 a.m. sessions, even after games. What was his recovery like?
Tim DiFrancesco:
“It was starting to be [a focus]. He definitely burned it down. One of his calling cards was preparation—his confidence came from preparation.
There’s a classic story I tell a lot. We lost in Memphis, flew to Chicago, landed at 3 or 4 a.m. I finally get to my room and I get a text: ‘What are you doing?’ I said, ‘Nothing, what do you need?’ He said, ‘I want to work out right now.’
I go down, hear classical music in the lobby, and it’s him playing Mozart on the piano at 4:30 in the morning. Then we went to work out—even though we had a back-to-back that night.”

Cold Plunge Benefits for Athletes
Tim DiFrancesco:
“Late in his career, Kobe knew he couldn’t cheat the system anymore. He latched onto one brand of cold tub that he felt was the best and demanded I have that set up in every city we traveled to.
Sometimes we’d drive an hour out of the way just to get to that specific cold tub. I’d think, ‘Isn’t a cold tub a cold tub?’ But for him, it was about stacking every possible edge. He was always playing chess while others were playing checkers.”
Float Tanks and Modern Recovery Options

Cory: Was sauna and cold plunging a thing in recovery much at that point?
Tim DiFrancesco:
“Teams had cryo chambers, some cold plunges. Infrared saunas came later. Float tanks had just come onto the scene. The more progressive players were already exploring them.”
Cory: Where do you stand on float tanks?
Tim DiFrancesco:
“I love it. But it may not be for everyone. Cold plunges are great, but what if someone is hypersensitive to cold? You might actually increase stress instead of aiding recovery.
Float tanks can be phenomenal if you’re comfortable in enclosed spaces. For the right person, either strategy can be game-changing. Just like exercise, not every great method is great for every person.”

Durability Over Strength: The True Goal of Recovery
Tim DiFrancesco:
“The ability I could help players with most was availability—durability. Am I preparing them more for their landings than their jumps? Am I building resilience to withstand the rigors of the game?
That’s the priority over just getting stronger. Recovery is the foundation of performance.”

For prep school players, cold plunges, float tanks, proper nutrition, and rest aren’t extras—they’re essentials. Kobe Bryant treated recovery like a weapon, and young athletes can learn from that mindset today.
