How to Choose the Right Academic Fit for College-Bound Hoopers
Finding the right prep school for high-academic basketball recruits isn’t about the biggest brand—it’s about the right academic and athletic balance.
We explored this topic with Coach Jon Stone, head coach at The Hun School of Princeton, who has decades of experience helping players earn opportunities at Ivy League, Patriot League, and NESCAC programs.
Jon shared what really matters when families evaluate academics, transcripts, and competition levels—and how “fit” consistently beats “name recognition.”

Hun School players celebrate a championship moment—lifting the trophy as a testament to teamwork, perseverance, and program pride.
Academic Depth vs. Brand Name in Prep School Selection
Cory: A lot of families start their search focused on “big-name” schools. What do you tell them?
Jon: “Sometimes families look at rankings or the biggest names first. But a school’s reputation doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right academic or athletic fit.”
Jon: “You have to dig into the course catalog, the academic support, and what kind of college list graduates are producing. That tells you a lot more than a brochure.”
Jon: “The best prep schools for basketball and academics don’t just push AP classes—they balance rigor with the right support system.”
What Colleges Actually Look For

The Hun School celebrates its senior basketball players—AJ, Drae, Evan, and Jasai—alongside managers Devyn and Tamara, during their final home game of the season.
Cory: How do colleges evaluate prep school transcripts when recruiting high-academic players?
Jon: “College coaches and admissions officers know the difference between a 3.5 at a really challenging prep and a 3.9 somewhere less rigorous. They read transcripts differently.”
Jon: “For Ivy, Patriot, or NESCAC schools, your transcript tells a story—what you chose to take, how you challenged yourself, and how consistent you were over time.”
Jon: “If your transcript shows growth and accountability, that goes a long way with admissions and college coaches alike.”

APs vs. Electives — Building a College-Ready Transcript
Cory: Some families believe loading up on APs guarantees a better college outcome. What’s your take?
Jon: “It’s about balance. Too many APs can backfire if the student can’t handle it. Colleges would rather see success across a challenging schedule than burnout.”
Jon: “Electives also matter—public speaking, writing, or business classes show versatility. Those are the kind of skills college professors and coaches appreciate.”
Jon: “If a kid can manage a demanding academic load and still show up every day for basketball, that’s the kind of player schools like ours are proud to send to college.”
Fit Over Prestige — The Truth About Prep School Selection

Shoot, score, repeat! The Hun School Raiders hit the road to face Westtown in a high-level prep basketball matchup.
Cory: So, if you were advising a parent today on choosing between two top schools, what would you tell them?
Jon: “I’d ask, ‘Where will your son or daughter be happiest and most supported?’ Because the happiest students are the most productive.”
Jon: “That’s the biggest misconception—families assume the more selective school guarantees more exposure. But college coaches recruit kids who perform, not logos.”
Jon: “The right fit means a school that develops both sides of the student—the brain and the athlete. If you find that, the recruiting takes care of itself.”
Cory’s Takeaway — Fit Fuels Future Opportunity
