Post-Grad Years in the Current NIL Landscape
The group of players who will be playing college basketball during the 2025-26 season have a chance to make the most money ever for college athletes. After this season there looks to be a changing of some rules which could lower the total amount being spent on building these teams. So that means good players need to strike when it is hot. Which brings me to good players in the class of 2025. If you have low major or D2 offers, it might make sense to invest in a post-grad year to see if you can bump up a level in play. Doing this could increase your level of pay!
In the past the pitch was to do a post-grad year to see if you could earn a scholarship. The investment could be high, but if a four-year full ride came from it, then the payoff was in the six-figure range. That is the value of a college education which used to be the main purpose of getting a scholarship. Now it’s hard to know if being academically eligible will even matter in the future.
Looking to the Future
There is no crystal ball in prep school basketball which means there are no guarantees on whether this will happen. But in the past scholarships weren’t a guarantee either. But you take the chance to see if anything will come of it. You won’t get the reward unless you try. So what is my takeaway advice? If you are a top player in your state and you already have solid D1 offers, then reach out to learn more about a potential post-grad option. It has the opportunity to put six figures into your bank account.
