The Post-Grad Action Plan: AAU, Elite Camps, and a Target List Before Day One

How Post-Grad Hoopers Can Turn Momentum Into College Opportunities

The most successful post-grad players don’t show up in September trying to start their recruiting—they arrive ready to finish it.
We sat down with Coach Billy Thom, former head coach at Millbrook School, to map out what the smartest post-grad athletes do before stepping foot on campus.

From choosing the right AAU program to creating a targeted college list, this is the blueprint for making your prep year productive from day one.

1. Lock Your AAU Fit Before the Post-Grad Year Begins

Cory: You’ve said every successful post-grad year starts with summer preparation. What does that mean?

Billy: “You have to find the right AAU fit before you even arrive. If you’re serious about college basketball, your summer team should already be building your profile.”

Billy: “Too many kids think they’ll start the recruiting process once they’re on campus. But if your name isn’t already on some coaches’ lists before September, you’re already behind.”

Billy: “Use AAU to get game film, to connect with coaches, and to figure out your level. The best players come into prep school already in motion.”

2. Pick 3–5 Elite Camps to Maximize Visibility

Solid win over St. Luke’s — Millbrook remains undefeated in NEPSAC play. A disciplined, confident group proving that preparation always wins.

Cory: How do elite prospect camps factor into the timeline?

Billy: “Camps are where college coaches actually see you in their environment. Pick three to five that match your target level—don’t just go to big-name camps.”

Billy: “If you’re a D3-level guard, go where those coaches will be. If you’re chasing D2 or Patriot League interest, pick events that line up with those schools.”

Billy: “Camps are for exposure, but they’re also for feedback. A good camp tells you where you stand, and that helps you set realistic goals.”

3. Build a Target List Before Day One

Cory: You talk a lot about having a college target list before stepping into the gym. Why is that so important?

Billy: “A post-grad year isn’t a discovery period—it’s a conversion period. You should already have 3–8 schools on your radar before the first practice.”

Billy: “Know who’s recruiting your position, what their roster looks like, and what level is the best fit academically and athletically.”

Billy: “When players come in prepared like that, we can tailor film, communication, and game schedules toward those targets from the start.”

4. How Coaches Help PGs Convert Interest Into Offers

Millbrook’s gym atmosphere captures what prep basketball is all about—competition, community, and preparation in action.

Cory: What role do coaches play once the player arrives?

Billy: “Our job is to refine, not reinvent. We watch their film, identify their level, and connect them to coaches who are actively recruiting.”

Billy: “We might tell a kid, ‘You’re a D2 player right now, but if you improve your shooting consistency, you can push D1.’ Then we plan everything around that goal.”

Billy: “A lot of post-grads think exposure is random. It’s not. It’s built through planning and communication.”

Cory’s Takeaway — Arrive Prepared, Not Hopeful

A post-grad year moves fast. The players who get recruited aren’t waiting for opportunities—they’ve already built them.
Coach Thom’s roadmap makes it simple: prepare early, target wisely, and communicate consistently.

At PREP Athletics, we help families build this plan before the school year starts—so by fall, it’s not about discovery, it’s about conversion.
